On Location: How I Transformed the Cairo Citadel Into a Cinematic Set
Behind the Scenes of a Dark & Moody Fashion Portrait Series
The Vision
For my "Shadows of History" series, I wanted to contrast the timeless grandeur of Salah El-Din’s Citadel with modern, high-fashion drama. The goal: turn this iconic Cairo landmark into a gothic editorial set using natural light and strategic styling.
The Transformation
1. Scouting & Timing
Golden Hour Magic: Shot 90 minutes before sunset for long, directional shadows.
Hidden Corners: Avoided tourist-heavy areas, focusing on the Mosque of Muhammad Ali’s arched corridors for natural framing.
2. Lighting Design
Natural Chiaroscuro: Used the citadel’s stone lattices to create striped shadow patterns on the model.
Bounce & Block: A silver reflector (hidden behind pillars) lifted shadows on the face, while a black flag deepened background contrasts.
3. Styling the Scene
Wardrobe: A flowing black gown by [Designer Name] echoed the citadel’s domes, with a blood-red velvet cape for a pop of drama.
Makeup: Metallic gold eyeliner mirrored the mosque’s brass details, paired with matte burgundy lips.
4. Composition Tricks
Foreground Layers: Shot through smoke grenades (safely!) to add haze and depth.
Architectural Lines: Used the mosque’s symmetrical doorways to lead the eye to the model.
The Challenges
Wind: The cape kept billowing unpredictably—solved by clipping weights to its hem.
Tourist Interruptions: Paused shooting during call-to-prayer for authenticity (and respect).
Gear Used
Camera: Sony A7IV + 85mm f/1.4 GM
Lighting: Natural light only, with a 5-in-1 reflector for control.
Accessories: ND filter to preserve sky details in harsh light.
